About NGO
Cathedral Relief Service (CRS) was established in 1971 by Canon Subir Biswas of St. Paul’s Cathedral in Calcutta (now Kolkata), a repercussion of the civil war in what is now Bangladesh. Thousands of refugees poured over India’s north-eastern borders into Calcutta, swelling existing slums and creating new ones.
Initially, CRS offered emergency relief providing food, clothing and mobile units. Subsequently, CRS evolved from a relief provider to a non-governmental development organization.
The aim is not to provide aid or give handouts, but to help those in need regardless of faith, through slum and rural community committees. The goal is to build self-sufficient communities by encouraging and training teachers to provide healthcare and enabling the empowerment of women in particular, teaching women skills to ensure an income source to support the communities themselves in planning anOur mission is to provide Education, Healthcare and Empowerment to women and children of all faiths and to motivate them to realize their full potential through individual and collective action and change. We bring together people with different challenges to be strong and work as one to secure their rights.
